Programs Assistant (Curatorial & Visitor Engagement)

Museum London invites applications for the full-time permanent position of Programs Assistant. This is a key support role at the Museum, providing exceptional customer service while stationed at the welcome desk and working to provide administrative assistance to curators and collection registrars. Reporting to the Head of Operations and Visitor Experience, the Programs Assistant is part of a collaborative team committed to the work of the Museum and to making collections, exhibitions and other programs accessible to a diverse public. 

The ideal candidate is a service oriented, digitally conversant multitasker and problem-solver, with strong interpersonal and organizational skills, and a keen eye for detail. The Programs Assistant is a learner with knowledge and interest in collections, contemporary museum practice, the work of artists, and a passion for storytelling and facilitating connection through art and artifacts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provides clerical support for the Museum’s curatorial activities and assists in the development of exhibitions, collections, and other programs.
  • Acts as a first point of contact between the Museum and the public, and performs welcome desk duties, as required.
  • Works in collaboration with and shares duties with the Front of House Coordinator as directed.
  • Works collaboratively with the Front of House Coordinator and other staff to book tours and assist participants with program registration and related duties.
  • Provides support for curatorial and collections committee meetings by scheduling, setting up, recording disseminating minutes, and performing data-entry as directed.
  • Works closely with curators and registrars preparing collection and exhibition-related correspondence and forms; and coordinates applications for Canadian Cultural Property certification.
  • Compiles lists of art and artifact donations and arranges for appraisals and photography.
  • Organizes and maintains exhibition files for the Museum’s archival records; and maintains the Museum’s archival holdings and publications library, including documentation and press coverage.
  • Manages the Museum’s ISBN; tracks the assignment of ISBN to Museum publications and submits ML publication to the National Library of Canada.
  • Works collaboratively to support marketing with copyright permissions and related requests.
  • Supports funding applications through the collection and management of statistical information related to the Museum’s programs and uploads this information into CADAC, and other support as required.
  • Compiles materials provided by curatorial staff and conducts research as directed; contributes information programs, policies and procedures for use at the welcome desk.

Skills and Abilities

  • Must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, written and verbal, and experience in customer-service oriented settings. 
  • Must have experience preparing and drafting correspondence, editing and formatting letters, reports, minutes, correspondence, and similar. 
  • Proficient in word processing, spreadsheet, internet and database applications including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Teams), Google Drive, and Zoom. 
  • Energetic, self-motivated, results-oriented and a strong work ethic; works well both independently and collaboratively. 
  • Strong organizational skills including planning, prioritizing, time management, flexibility, the ability to multitask, and high level of attention to detail. 
  • High level of trust and integrity, contributing to a positive work culture; ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with tact and discretion.

Qualifications

  • A post-secondary degree in a related discipline, i.e., Art History, History, Curatorial Studies. 
  • A minimum of 1 year experience working in a museum environment. 
  • Certificate or Diploma in Collection Management and/or Applied Museum Studies an asset.

Compensation

The yearly salary range for this role is $41,281 to $55,038, plus a competitive pension and comprehensive benefits package as per the Collective Agreement. The position is part of the CUPE bargaining unit. 

Reporting to: Head, Operations and Visitor Experience
Hours: Full-time; 35 hours/week, with a schedule that is normally Sunday to Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with occasional work during evenings, including on occasional Thursday evenings during open hours, and weekends.
Location: This is an in-person position based in London, Ontario at Museum London.

Call for Artist-Educators

Museum London is accepting ongoing applications for paid, contract Artist-Educators. Opportunities are available to develop and lead arts or crafts workshops and classes, and also drop-in sessions for public events such as Family Day, Canada Day, or other civic festivals. Activities will  take place virtually or on-site. 

We are seeking Artists with:

  • Teaching experience to lead programs for children, youth, or adults. 
  • The experience of, and enthusiasm for communicating ideas clearly, inspiring creativity, developing technical confidence, and modeling inclusivity.
  • A commitment to working with the Museum London Programs team to reach activity deadlines and budgets.
  • The knowledge and ability to explore art or craft practices, histories, techniques, or materials. 

Arts or crafts-based activity themes could explore:

  • The practices or contexts of exhibiting our permanent collection art or artists. 
  • London and regional communities or histories including, and not limited to Indigenous, Black, Disability, and LGBTQ2S+ perspectives.
