Current Opportunities

Reporting to the Head of Programs, the Preparator works as part of a team and assists with the building, installation, and takedown of exhibitions and exhibition related materials. The successful candidate handles and transports objects from ML’s art and artifact collections, as well as objects on loan from other collections. The Preparator also plays a critical role in maintaining the safe and orderly condition of the loading dock and exhibition tools and materials.

The successful candidate will be dependable with the ability to consistently work the assigned schedule, with most shifts occurring over two three-to-six-week blocks during spring and fall months. As a hardworking, professionally minded, and self-motivated person with a passion for art, history, and contemporary culture, the Preparator plays a vital behind-the-scenes role, helping to realize ML’s high standard of exhibition programming.

Scope of Work

  • Works as part of a team to prepare galleries and materials for exhibitions and other events, following specifications developed with curatorial staff.
  • Facilitates exhibition turnover, including painting, wall and plinth construction, AV requirements, lighting, furniture and other display needs while ensuring objects’ safety.
  • In consultation with artists, curatorial and collections staff, installs and disassembles art and history exhibitions within a prescribed time frame.
  • Professionally packs/unpacks, loads/unloads, delivers and returns to storage works of art and artifacts.
  • Works safely, observing Health & Safety requirements.
  • Helps maintain department supplies, as well as a clean and orderly working environment.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

    Qualifications

    • High School diploma.
    • Must have a valid driver’s license.
    • Experience in the care, handling, installation, and lighting of art or artifacts is an asset.
    • Basic proficiency in carpentry; comfort working with a range of AV equipment and power tools/workshop equipment (table saw, pneumatic tools, skilsaw, etc.) is an asset.
    • Strength and mobility to perform the required physical duties.
    • Knowledge and practice of workplace health and safety.
    • Effective at following and realizing instructions.
    • Ability to communicate clearly and professionally.
    • Hardworking, professionally minded, and self-motivated, with the ability to work independently and in teams.
    • Ability to work flexible hours when needed.

    Hours

    • Part-time as needed from Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, mostly during Spring and Fall months.

    Location

    • This is an existing, in-person position based in London, Ontario.

    Compensation

    • As per the current Collective Agreement the hourly wage is $22.68. This position is part of the CUPE bargaining unit.
