Supervisor of Retail and Visitor Services

Museum London is seeking a dynamic and experienced Supervisor of Retail and Visitor Services to lead the day-to-day operations of Shop Museum London—both onsite and online—and to oversee visitor service functions that support an exceptional and welcoming guest experience. This role blends operational supervision with a passion for community engagement, art, and retail. 

Reporting to the Executive Director or their designate, the Supervisor ensures the Shop and Visitor Services are operated professionally, aligned with Museum values and mission, and contribute meaningfully to both the visitor experience and revenue generation. The successful candidate is a leader who will demonstrate an ability to foster positive customer relationships, build rapport with a wide range of visitors, and inspire a team of staff and volunteers to deliver outstanding service.

Key Responsibilities

  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, and evaluate Visitor Service & Shop Associates.
  • Approve staff timesheets and monitor attendance and performance.
  • Collaborate with staff to recruit, train, and schedule Shop volunteers; track their hours.
  • Assign projects and monitor progress in both retail and visitor service areas.
  • Maintain and update operational manuals and ensure compliance with procedures.
  • Develop and implement an annual retail business plan aligned with Museum London’s strategic goals.
  • Participate in the leadership team to contribute to multi-year budgeting.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with visitors to encourage return visits and ongoing engagement.
  • Champion a culture of exceptional customer service and inclusive hospitality.
  • Collaborate on marketing, promotional campaigns, and special events.
  • Act as lead buyer for Shop Museum London: source goods, liaise with artists, artisans, and vendors; negotiate contracts and manage purchasing budgets.
  • Oversee display and merchandising, ensuring a visually compelling and organized retail environment.
  • Maintain secure inventory and manage artist-designed merchandise, limited editions, and product development.
  • Manage shipping and receiving of Shop inventory and artist consignments.
  • Maintain POS, CRM systems, and online shop inventory; fulfill online orders.
  • Ensure financial accuracy including cash handling, reconciliation, inventory controls, and sales reporting.
  • Review monthly reports with leadership to monitor sales targets and performance.
  • Oversee confidential customer data collection and feedback processes as required.
  • Liaise with Security to ensure the safety of goods and visitors within the retail space.

Skills, Experience & Attributes

  • Proven experience in retail and/or visitor services, including inventory management, visual merchandising, and customer engagement.
  • Experience supervising staff and volunteers in a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a natural ability to connect with a wide range of individuals.
  • Skilled in building rapport and fostering relationships with customers and community members.
  • Knowledge of POS and inventory software systems; strong technical aptitude.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and comfort with data and reporting.
  • Diplomacy, discretion, and sound judgment in staff and customer interactions.
  • Flexibility to work a Tuesday–Saturday schedule and occasional additional hours as required.

Education & Training

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent.

Post-secondary education in retail sales, business, arts administration, or a related field is considered an asset.

Hours of Work 

This is a full-time position working an average of 35 hours a week onsite, with a normal schedule from Tuesday through Saturday.

Compensation

Annual salary of $45,000 with comprehensive health and dental benefits, OMERS pension plan and free on-site parking.

Compensation includes base pay with the potential for performance-based commissions, rewarding strong sales results and customer engagement.

Summer Interpretive Coordinator

Museum London is seeking a creative, engaging, and organized individual to join our team as a Summer Interpretive Coordinator. Reporting to the Head of Programs, the ideal candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, working well with staff, volunteers, security staff, and visitors. Comfort with public speaking and leading group activities is essential. Under the direction of the Curator of Engagement and Outreach, the candidate will develop creative and informative content for diverse audiences both on and offsite. A demonstrated commitment to inclusion, equity, and accessibility is required. Passionate about the role Museums play in a community and a believer in the transformative power of art, history, and culture, this role will collaborate in the development and facilitation of hands-on activities for visitors of all ages and abilities. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate, under the guidance of the Curator of Engagement and Outreach, in the development and facilitation of hands-on activities for visitors of all ages and abilities. 
  • Maintain interactive exhibit materials and supplies. Ensure supplies are stocked, cleaned, sanitized, and accessible for visitor use.
  • Assist in developing and implementing interactive learning experiences to deepen understanding of exhibitions and collections.

Skills and Requirements: 

  •  Must be currently enrolled in a secondary, or post-secondary institution or within six months of graduation.
  • Provide proof of student enrolment.
  • Must be a resident of Ontario during the period of employment. 
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada and have a Social Insurance Number (SIN). 
  • Background or interest in visual arts, history, museums, and education.
  • Experience in working with the public (including children, families, seniors, and new Canadians).
  • Works well independently and with Museum staff and volunteers.
  • Valid Police Records Check.
  • Complete mandatory Health & Safety training.
  • Must be 15 years of age or older.

Hours & Compensation

The Summer Interpretive Coordinator’s employment contract length will be 30 days at 7.25 hours per day at $17.20 /hour beginning July 7, 2025, and concluding Aug. 18, 2025. Mon. Aug. 4 is a Civic Holiday. Given the nature of the role, work on weekends and evenings is sometimes required. A mandatory training session will be scheduled with ongoing training as required. This position is part of the Government of Ontario’s Summer Employment Opportunities Program.

Call for Artist-Educators

Museum London is accepting ongoing applications for paid, contract Artist-Educators. Opportunities are available to develop and lead arts or crafts workshops and classes, and also drop-in sessions for public events such as Family Day, Canada Day, or other civic festivals. Activities will  take place virtually or on-site. 

We are seeking Artists with:

  • Teaching experience to lead programs for children, youth, or adults. 
  • The experience of, and enthusiasm for communicating ideas clearly, inspiring creativity, developing technical confidence, and modeling inclusivity.
  • A commitment to working with the Museum London Programs team to reach activity deadlines and budgets.
  • The knowledge and ability to explore art or craft practices, histories, techniques, or materials. 

Arts or crafts-based activity themes could explore:

  • The practices or contexts of exhibiting our permanent collection art or artists. 
  • London and regional communities or histories including, and not limited to Indigenous, Black, Disability, and LGBTQ2S+ perspectives.
