Photographer Ela Kurowska received OAC Exhibition Assistance in 2018-19. Trained as a biochemist, her “Light Forms” are made using an old scientific technique in which polarized light helps visualize stresses in solid, transparent materials. Kurowska experiments with solidified, soft organic gels which, when deformed and viewed through polarizing filters, become colourful, luminescent forms that resemble living organisms. The artist achieves different effects by subjecting her miniature gel objects to steps such as heating, molding, arranging, or stressing.⠀
