Gaawiin Ogiibagidenaawaasiiwaawan / They Did Not Let It Go exhibition video launch
This exhibition marked the 25th anniversary of the Ipperwash Crisis when, during a peaceful land occupation, Dudley George was killed by provincial police. Curators narrate the tour with respect to the resistance and lack of consent of the Anishinaabeg to surrender their homeland, their bodies, and their images to colonial power. This video is being launched in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
We will also be sharing a conversation with Lela George, spirit name Yeyatalunyuhe, where she discusses her new addition to Museum London’s collection. This conversation between Lela and our Curator of Regional History, Amber Lloydlangston, took place on June 1, 2021 at a memorial for Indigenous children, which Lela organized, outside of St. Peter’s Basilica church. Lela put the callout on Facebook for people to join her and place shoes on the steps of the church to mark the discovery and loss of children at residential schools across Turtle Island / North America.
